Florida loan modification company, Truman Foreclosure Assistance, leaves family with nothing after taking their money

Hundreds of thousands of families are losing their homes to foreclosure. Some because they bought homes they couldn’t afford and some through no fault of their own…like Tammy Vanderford and her family.

The Vanderford’s weren’t living beyond their means. They have a modest house in a working class Bradenton neighborhood where they’ve lived for 16years.

But 18 months ago, Tammy lost her factory job and her husband’s hours were cut at his. They could not longer pay their mortgage and they needed help.

So the Vanderford’s turned to Miami based loan modification company Truman Foreclosure Assistance, which, as it turned out, resulted in matters going from bad to worse.

Mike Rockwood has modified five of his own loans, including his personal residence and investment property. He has created a top-notch workbook to walk you through the steps of fighting to get the best terms on your loan modification.

Vanderford insists she did her homework, checking the company out with the Better Business Bureau. Truman Foreclosure Assistance had a B-Plus rating.

Vanderford paid Truman $,1500 up-front after they were assured by the promise on the companies website: “If we are unable to negotiate a plan with your lender that improves your situation, we will refund 100% of your money no questions asked.”

At first there were weekly calls, regular status reports.

“And the mortgage company said they had already talked to them,” says Vanderford.

But then, the Vanderford’s say, the updates stopped. The run around began. Their calls were no longer returned. Finally came word Truman was out of business.

“It was devastating. Oh I don’t know how to explain how devastating it was. Here we had trusted these people to help try to save our house. We really didn’t know where to go. We spent money that we really didn’t have to begin with,” says Vanderford.

This is an all too common story says The Better Business Bureau’s John Zajac.

In the case of Truman Foreclosure Assistance, the Florida Attorney General’s office says it received 68 complaints in the past two years against the company, resulting in action by the Federal Trade Commission.

But here’s another all too common story. According to the FTC, it turns out the owners of Truman didn’t go out of business. They simply changed the company’s name to the Franklin Financial Group and moved their office to another part of Miami.

“We see that pretty frequently, but as long as we know where to look and that could be through media reports, consumer complaints, we can follow that train and we have done so successfully,” says Sandy Copes of the Attorney General’s office.

Although the company’s website it still up, the phone has been disconnected.

    I too am a victim of Truman Foreclosure Assistance; my story is identical to the Vanderfords except representative from Truman never contacted my mortgage lender although they said that they did. I paid the Truman Schiesters $2,295. I filed complaint with the Attorney General in Florida and NY the state in which I live. I also filed a complaint with the Florida Dept of Financial Services and yes the FTC has filed in court against the company; but none of these things prevent the Truman Scam Artist from doing this to some other family. They are just operating under a different name. What about us? The victims? I could not get refunded from my bank because by the time I realized they were full of it, it had exceeded 60 days from the last payment to Truman. I can not afford travel right now to Florida to place a small claims case too busy trying to save my home. How do the existing victims become whole?

    @RNW
    I am also a victim of those idiots Truman Forclosure Assistance. I gave them a check for $2,100 and they took it and ran. My wife and did and followed their every word and look where it got us. Now my house is in forclosure and we stand to lose everything we worked so hard to achieve. My wife is in poor health and I have children and we are on a fixed income. They never return calls for obvious reasons. There is a saying that a man with nothing to lose is a dangerous man, what about a man who has everything to lose; how dangerous is that man? That is the question I have for you Shimmy, Eli and everyone else who is knowingly involved. What do we do? Well I will tell you what I am going to do, actually what you’re going to do, you will right this wrong, you will give me my money back. I had a dream your families suffered like mine has, and dreams do come true every day. I will see you sooner or later :)
